Chapter 1: The Fairy's Announcement The Fairy's Announcement It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon in Lollyland. Itty Bitty Kitty and her best friend, Luna Unicorn, were playing in the field of flowers behind Itty's home, the royal palace of Lollyland. "I spy with my little eye ... a fairy !" Luna exclaimed. "A fairy?" Itty giggled. "Good one, Luna! We are more than a hop, skip, and a jump from Fairy Forest. There are no fairies in this field!" "She's right, Itty!" Itty turned to the sparkling flower that had just spoken. "Really?" Now Itty believed it. Flowers rarely spoke. When they did, it was because they had something very important to say. Itty looked up and saw a tiny fairy flying toward them. A moment later, the fairy landed on a flower. She was no larger than a butterfly. From the miniature trumpet she carried, Itty knew exactly what kind of fairy she was. "That's an announcement fairy!" Luna cried. "Maybe she's looking for the palace," Itty whispered. She moved closer to the fairy. "Are you looking for my parents, the King and Queen?" "No, Itty Bitty Kitty, this announcement is for you !" the fairy squeaked. Suddenly the field became so quiet you could hear the water of Starfish Falls rushing in the distance. The little fairy blew her tiny trumpet. Three jingling notes rang out. "Itty Bitty Kitty, I have been sent by the shooting stars with some fairy exciting news!" The fairy paused for one dramatic moment before continuing. "In one week, your eighth shooting star will arrive!" Itty was speechless. Luna was speechless. Excerpted from The Newest Princess by Melody Mews All rights reserved by the original copyright owners. School Library Journal Review
K-Gr 3--Itty Bitty Kitty lives in Lollyland, a magical kingdom where candy and sweet treat landscapes feature prominently (though fruits and vegetables also grow in Goodie Grove). Inhabitants include other friendly animals, small fairies, talking flowers, and singing mermaids. As the daughter of King and Queen Kitty, Itty Bitty is excited when a messenger fairy announces her eighth shooting star is approaching, signaling the start of Itty Bitty's role as a princess. Upon learning all of the duties of a traditional princess, Itty Bitty grows increasingly reluctant and fears she is not princess material after all. She enjoys choosing a tiara and considering new wardrobe options, but is dissatisfied with the prospects of a new hairstyle, a new bedroom, and private tutoring. Itty Bitty Kitty's world will find an audience with fans of Daisy Meadows's "Rainbow Magic," though Stubbings's illustrations create an adorably rounded, comically cute cartoon quality that differentiates this title from other sugary-sweet early chapter books. The story is simple and innocuous, but children will relate to Itty Bitty's trepidation about unanticipated developments, paired with her delight in more palatable adjustments like new clothes. All is resolved quite easily when Itty Bitty's parents explain that she doesn't have to make any changes she doesn't want to make. Readers' experiences with change won't always work out this way, but the positive underlying message is about being true to oneself. VERDICT A fine purchase for medium-sized early chapter book collections, notable for its spirited illustrations.--Sara White, Seminole County Public Library, Casselberry, FL
