Library Journal Review
Kaishian, curator of mycology at the New York State Museum, grew up feeling like an outsider, being an immigrant, a person of color, neurodivergent, and queer. She found solace in nature and marveled at the interconnectedness of all things--humans, animals, plants, and fungi. In her debut book, combining memoir with science writing, she explores the presence of queerness in nature and examines how humans have distorted what is natural by insisting on a binary. She narrates her own book, sharing her experiences alongside those of slugs, birds, mushrooms, and other creatures, with tenderness, scientific acumen, and a hope for a deeper understanding of the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Her wonder-tinged narration communicates the damage wrought by rigid binary thinking and traditional biological models. Listeners will appreciate Kaishian's infectious sincerity and the wealth of information she shares. VERDICT This lyrical work abounds with grace, emotional insight, and marvelous science. It will resonate with nature and science lovers, as well as those seeking an uplifting celebration of the planet's glory.--Elyssa Everling
